El cuarto de rescate

This is the only edifice from the Inca period in Cajamarca; it is the only one, but not insignificant. The Emperor Atahualpa was detained in this place. He underestimated the force of the hundreds of Spanish’s who unloaded on their shores. He has firstly fallen in an easy trap, then he has been detained and a ransom has been required for his freedom. It is possible to imagine the last days of the Inca Emperor before his execution in this room with low ceiling, with trapezoid doors and windows (typical of the Inca architecture). It is said that the ransom they required was to fill the room with gold till the height of the raised Inca arm… At the site entrance, you can admire modern paintings showing the stories of Atahualpa and the end of the Inca Empire.
